fighting policy

The Natchitoches Parish School Board remains firmly committed to providing the safest environment possible for all students and staff. As outlined in the district’s student handbook, NPSB enforces a zero-tolerance policy on fighting and violence on school property, buses, and during any school-related events.

Under the policy, a fight is defined as a hostile confrontation with physical contact involving two or more individuals. Students found participating in a fight face strict disciplinary measures, including recommendations for expulsion to the Alternative Center, depending on the seriousness of the offense and prior history.

Key consequences include:

  • Middle and High School (Grades 6–12):

    • First fight: Recommendation for 90 school days expulsion to the Alternative Center (re-entry review possible at 45 days or end of semester)

    • Second fight: Recommendation for 180 school days expulsion (re-entry review possible at 90 days or end of semester)

    • Third fight: Recommendation for one-year expulsion

  • Elementary School (Grades 3–5):

    • First fight: 10-day long-term suspension in the Alternative Center

    • Second fight: Recommendation for 45 school days expulsion

    • Third fight: Recommendation for 90 school days expulsion

Additionally:

  • Recording or posting a fight leads to an automatic 10-day long-term suspension to the Alternative Center.

  • A major campus disruption may result in a semester-long recommendation to the Alternative Center.

All fights will be investigated to consider factors such as premeditation, self-defense, opportunity to walk away, involvement of multiple students, injury to staff, and whether bystanders instigated the fight. If two or more of these criteria are met, expulsion is recommended.

Upon placement in the Alternative Center, students are not allowed to participate in any school activities, including sports, dances, ceremonies, and graduations.

The Natchitoches Parish School Board emphasizes that these policies are in place to protect students and staff and maintain a safe, respectful learning environment for everyone.
